WALLACE PARK TENNIS CLUB'S JUNIOR INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS

 

Our Junior Instructional Tennis Program is designed to help young players learn, develop, and enjoy the game in a fun and supportive environment. With age-appropriate instruction and engaging drills, juniors build strong fundamentals while gaining confidence on the court.

Led by qualified coaches, sessions focus on proper technique, movement, coordination, and game play—all while encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship, and a love for tennis. Whether your child is picking up a racquet for the first time or looking to improve their skills, this program provides a great pathway for growth and development.

The Junior Instructional Program emphasizes learning through play, keeping lessons active, positive, and enjoyable so players stay motivated and excited to return each week.

There are 4 Junior Levels (Age 4-13) to register for via your member portal

Blue Ball (Age 4-5)

Red Ball (Age 5-7)

Orange Ball (Age 7-9)

Program Overview
Our Blue Ball program is designed as the first step in a child’s tennis journey. Created specifically for young players ages 4–5, this class focuses on developing coordination, balance, and fundamental movement skills in a fun, high-energy, and supportive environment.

Using red tennis balls, smaller courts, and age-appropriate equipment, players are introduced to the very basics of the tennis swing while building the athletic foundation needed for future development. Sessions are structured around engaging activities and games that keep children active, learning, and excited to come back each week.
Equipment: Red tennis balls (larger, softer, and slower than regular balls), smaller nets and courts. Players must bring their own racquet (17” or 19” recommended).
 
Focus Areas
  • Coordination & Movement Skills: Developing balance, agility, hand–eye coordination, and overall athletic ability through fun, movement-based games and activities.
  • Introduction to Swing Fundamentals: Learning the basic shapes and motions of the forehand and backhand in a simple, easy-to-understand format.
  • Confidence & Comfort on Court: Helping young players feel comfortable holding a racquet, moving around the court, and participating in structured group activities.
Program Goals
  • Athletic Foundation: Build the core physical skills necessary for long-term tennis development.
  • Early Technical Awareness: Introduce the fundamental movements of the tennis swing in an age-appropriate way.

Red Ball (Age 5-7)

Program Overview
Our Beginner Junior Red Ball Tennis Program is designed to introduce young players (ages 5-7) to the exciting world of tennis in a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way. Using smaller courts, red tennis balls, and appropriate equipment, this program ensures that kids experience success and joy while learning the fundamentals of the game.
Equipment: Red tennis balls (larger, softer, slower than regular balls), smaller nets, smaller courts. Students must bring their own racquets, size 17 & 19 recommended.
 
Focus Areas
  • Hand eye coordination: Fun activities to help kids develop the basic skills to track and hit the ball.
  • Basic Techniques: Introduction to basic strokes like forehand, backhand, and volleying
  • Teamwork: Encouraging collaboration through partner and team drills and games.
Program Goals
  • Skill development: Provide kids with a fun environment to learn and practice essential tennis skills while building coordination, balance, and agility.
  • Confidence building: Through structured drills and games, help kids gain confidence as they improve their tennis skills in a positive, supportive atmosphere.

 

 


 

Orange Ball (Agu 7-9)

Program Overview
Our Beginner/Intermediate Junior Orange Ball Tennis Program is designed for young players (ages 7-9) who are ready to take their tennis skills to the next level. Using orange tennis balls, which are slower and softer than regular balls, and medium-sized courts, this program helps children build on their fundamental skills while increasing their understanding of the game in a fun and supportive environment.
Equipment: Orange tennis balls (50% softer and slower than regular balls), smaller court. Students must bring their own racquets, size 21 & 23 recommended.
 
Focus Areas
  • Basic Techniques: Introduction to proper grips and serving
  • Strokes: Refining the fundamentals on forehands, backhands, volleys
  • Rallying: Building a foundation in rallying, scoring, and learning the rules of the game in a simplified way
Program Goals
  • Skill Development: Strengthen the technical foundation of basic strokes and introduce serving.
  • Point Play Experience: Introduce players to point play scenarios where they can apply their skills in a competitive, yet friendly, environment.
  • Sportsmanship: Through structured drills and point play scenarios promote teamwork, good sportsmanship, and a positive attitude on and off the court.

 


 

Green Ball (Age 9-12)

Program Overview
Our Beginner/Intermediate Junior Green Ball Tennis Program is designed for young players (ages 9-12) who are ready to take their tennis skills to the next level. Using green tennis balls, which are slightly faster than orange balls but still slower and softer than regular tennis balls, this program helps budding players refine their techniques and gain more experience on a full-size court to help them easily transition to regular balls.
Equipment: Green tennis balls (25% softer and slower then regular balls), full sized court. Students must bring their own racquets, size 25 & 26 recommended.
 
Focus Areas
  • Stroke Refinement: Improving the consistency of all the fundamental strokes in tennis
  • Footwork: Enhancing movement on the court and positioning.
  • Match Play: Introduction to structured matches, focusing on applying the fundamentals in competitive scenarios, learning how to keep score, and playing points.
  • Tactics & Strategy: Encouraging strategic thinking, such as shot selection, opening up the court, attacking/defending.
Program Goals
  • Skill Refinement: Fine-tune the techniques of all basic strokes while focusing on control and placement.
  • Game Understanding: Deepen players' understanding of the rules, scoring, and etiquette while preparing them for full matches.
  • Match Experience: Provide players with opportunities to play practice matches, helping them develop match readiness, composure, and sportsmanship.

 


 

Yellow Ball  (13-17)

Program Overview
Our Yellow Ball Tennis Program is designed for students who enjoy tennis as a fun and social activity, with a focus on improving their skills, staying active, and playing in a relaxed and supportive environment. This program is perfect for players who want to stay active, learn more about tennis, and have fun while playing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s a great way to develop skills, meet new people, and enjoy the sport without the pressure of competition.
Equipment: Yellow tennis balls, full sized court, Students must bring their own racquets, adult racquets recommended.
 
Focus Areas
  • Basic Stroke Development: Work on improving fundamental strokes like forehands, backhands, serves, and volleys with a focus on technique and consistency.
  • Match Play & Scoring: Learn how to play both singles and doubles, understanding the basic rules of scoring, and developing strategies for competitive play.
  • Sportsmanship & Social Interaction: Foster a positive and encouraging atmosphere that promotes teamwork, good sportsmanship, and healthy competition.
Program Goals
  • Skill Improvement: Help players enhance their tennis skills at a comfortable pace, focusing on consistency and technique.
  • Fitness and Health: Promote physical fitness, improve coordination, and encourage regular exercise in a low-pressure environment.
